About Justin O'Dell
Justin O'Dell is a recent Doctor of Musical Arts degree graduate from the University of Michigan. He was a fellowship student of Fred Ormand. O'Dell earned the Master of Music degree from Yale University while studying with David Shifrin and was a recipient of the Keith Wilson scholarship. He earned the Bachelor of Music degree from Western Michigan University, where he studied with Bradley Wong. Before attending Yale, O'Dell received an Irving S. Gilmore Emerging Artist Grant and a WMU Presidential Grant, which supported further study in Germany with Wolfgang Meyer at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik in Karlsruhe.
An active soloist and chamber musician, highlights of performances in Germany include a recital at the Karlsruhe Palace Renaissance Hall, in which the Badische Neuste Nachrichten proclaimed, "O'Dell was brilliant with contrasting registers of his instrument," and a concert in the Karlsruhe Center for Art and Media Technology, which garnered critical praise, "his tonal beauty was shown at its best advantage." In April 2006, Justin performed a critically acclaimed, nationally televised recital from the Macedonian National Museum in the capital Skopje. This performance was in conjunction with his guest appearance in the “Days of Macedonian Music” Festival. During the summer of 2006, assisted by an LSU grant, he worked with clarinetist Alessandro Carbonare in Rome, Italy. The project helped to produce a method for the use and teaching of Carbonare’s book on sound and technique.
O'Dell joined the woodwind faculty in the School of Music at Louisiana State University in 2005, where he teaches clarinet and performs with the Timm Wind Quintet.
